there's problems with the way romney went through that debate. looked good but didn't exactly convey a lot of truth. your thoughts? >> that's exactly what democrats are saying. paul ryan was out today and says that he expects for the next month he's going to hear from the obama campaign that they are liars and you hear liberals picking up on that. again, to go to this point about "saturday night live," i think it underscores what people already saw from that debate, which is that president obama turned in a very poor performance. i thought that he would have been smart to go on to "saturday night live" and sort of lampoon himself. we saw him do that out west. i guess the "saturday night live" folks reached out to him and they both declined. i think it has been a right of passage in elections, going back to 2008 when mccain was on, obama was on, hillary clinton was on and sarah palin, too. it is part of our political discourse. it reinforces the narratives. i think "snl" has had problems portraying obama. they switched to a new guy. jay ferrel see

gibbs tried to tackle romney's debate flip-flops. i think he did it here. let's watch. >> it's not rocket science to believe that the president was disappointed in the expectations that he has for himself. but, look, i think part of that was because, as i said earlier, we met a new mitt romney. we met a mitt romney that wanted to walk away from the central theory of his economic plan which is his tax cut. i don't have a tax cut that's $4.8 trillion or $5 trillion. i'm not going to cut taxes on the rich. i don't have a medicare voucher plan. i love teachers, i think we need more of them. i mean, look, don't believe me, speaker gingrich was pretty eloquent in running during the primaries in saying, look, mitt romney will say absolutely anything to get elected. >> well, one thing i have been saying about the campaign is the president needs surrogates out there, he needs confederates, people out there. i love charleston. a lot of people -- rather charlotte because in charlotte you heard an entire political party speaking led by people like deval patrick, the go

positive impressions of mitt romney from that debate. i don't foe if this competes with that. but certainly we saw in the past couple of months that people were beginning to feel a lot more confident about the economic situation personally and for the country. you saw it in the polls. we were wondering why was this data turning around. bill clinton gave a great speech at the convention and everyone loved what clinton said. it now turns out there was some underlying economic trends that was feeding that that we didn't really know about, but that makes sense now. and i think if that's the case heading into the critical month of october and obviously in november where we're going to have one more jobs report, i think that really does benefit the president. because that's been the underlying issue of this entire campaign. it's been the issue that mitt romney's campaigned on from the get-go. >> at the convention i think he framed obama the case for obama and particularly the case for obama on the economy more clearly than anyone else has on t

he's willing to say anything, romney, anything in a debate. how do you beat a guy who is willing to say anything, who knows it only matters when the camera is off. when he sends out a staffer to correct the record. nobody is watching. that's what he likes. >> i don't disagree with you about the auto industry as an issue. i don't disagree with you about women's rights as an issue and equal pay, about you you can't walk away from the medicare issue and you can't let romney say that he's the guy who is going to protect medicare when he's, in fact, going to turn it into voucher care. senior citizens, especially in states like florida, pennsylvania, you know this, ohio, are going to be a big part of this electorate. they want to understand what's happening there. because the president didn't respond on medicare in the debate with any force, his advantage -- >> but you can't -- >> his advantage among seniors on the issue of medicare has shrunk. he's got to get that back, argue the issues you're arguing, but it's all got to be in a big context which

here is what he says in the debate, which is the real romney? >> do you think moderators should play that role? i don't want to knock jim lehrer, he's a distinguished journalist, but i have seen people like the late tim russert and people like bob schieffer, whenever they hear a complete nonsense statement from a politician on the sunday shows, they tend to go, now, just a minute. are you saying -- you can't believe that. that sort of general, ron, skepticism. you first, michelle. isn't it in order to say -- when a guy is flipping for an hour and a half, to stop him and say that's not been your position, sir? >> i understand the argument that he wants to be a kind of neutral arbiter, but, yes, absolutely. when you say, you know, flat out there is no tax cut for the wealthy in my plan or he says that kind of higher income people aren't going to pay any smaller of a share of the tax burden, when he's been saying on camera for more than a year now that he intends to reduce their rates to 20%, that he intends to reduce the inheritance tax, reduce ca

it would actually be a good question to ask mitt romney at the debate. if jim lehr is watching, maybe he should ask him that. >> i used to think, i still think, massachusetts is a poor training ground for presidential candidates because it's a weird culture up there. maybe the republicans run was not a good preparation for general election this year. anyway, in swing states the obama campaign has bombarded voters, as you said, with this powerful ad going after romney for his 47% putdown. let's take a look. >> 47% of the americans who vote for the president who are dependent, who believe they're victims, who believe the government has to care for them, who believes they're entitled to health care, food, housing, you name it, and they will vote for this president no matter what. so my job is not to worry about those -- i'll never take care of them. they should take care responsibility and take care of themselves. >> you look at this analytical, only three or four breaks, romney would be ahead right now, breaks going to obama's side. the romney performance

romney's team has concluded that the debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers he's memorized and has been practicing on aides since august. bob shrum, you have been on that particular role, preparing candidates for debate. what do you make of romney, a rather stiff customer to begin with, coming off as sort of a henny youngman or whatever, some sort of a don rickles with some zingers. i don't think of him as a zinger kind of guy where obama is expected to be left helpless. what do you make of that strategy? >> first of all, if you had it, you wouldn't announce it. it's kind of stupid. >> why are they leaking it? >> i don't know. because they're trying to hold onto their people, they're undisciplined, i have no idea. number two, zingers don't exist in a vacuum. it's not just coming up with some funny lines. they have to be part of the fabric of the argument and part of the fabric of who the person is. when ronald reagan said, there you go again, it was completely natural to him. as you know, chris, carter was right, he had opposed medicare at the star

just yesterday romney told the denver post, scene of the new debate tomorrow night, that he wouldn't revoke the visas, the new ones, that the two-year visas, president obama has granted to some young illegal immigrants. in june he said the people who have received the special visa that the president has put in place should expect that the visa would continue to be valid. i'm not going to take something that they've purchased. before those visas expired, we will have the full immigration reform plan i have proposed. compare that to what we heard in the primary campaign about young people here illegally. let's watch that. >> when i was governor i took the action of 'em powering our state police to enforce immigration laws. when you were governor, you said i don't want to build a fence. you put in place a magnet to draw illegals into the state which was giving $10,000 in of tuition credit to illegals that come into this country. >> even the lingo he's using, the derogatories, illegals, as if they're not people first. we m is the president for the center for american progress near rattan
